Members of the Great Council of Chiefs recently held a moment of silence to honor the memory of two former council members who have passed away: the high chief from Rotuma and the Turaga Na Tui Yale of Kadavu. This was confirmed by GCC Chairperson Ratu Viliame Seruvakula during a media briefing at a morning tea break.
The meeting, which spans two days, gathers chiefs and representatives from the 14 provinces to address significant concerns impacting the i-Taukei community. Attorney-General Graham Leung is anticipated to speak to the representatives regarding proposed village bylaws.
Key topics of today’s discussions include an evaluation of i-Taukei administration, a feasibility study on the decentralization of economic units, and an update on legislation that impacts the rights of the i-Taukei people. The meeting also features the presence of His Excellency, the President, and the Turaga Bale Na Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
As the meeting progresses, it presents a crucial opportunity for the leaders to collaborate on strategies that aim to enhance the livelihoods and governance of the i-Taukei community, fostering a spirit of unity and respect amidst the challenges they face.
This gathering is a promising step toward addressing pressing issues and ensuring that the voices of the i-Taukei people are heard within the broader governance framework.
