Israeli airstrikes on Gaza resumed on Tuesday, following accusations from Israel that the militant group Hamas breached a ceasefire agreement in place since earlier this month. The Israeli military has not elaborated on the strikes, which come amid a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring immediate “powerful attacks.” An Israeli military spokesperson claimed that Hamas had violated the ceasefire by launching an attack against Israeli forces in a region of Gaza under their control, describing it as a “blatant violation.”
The ceasefire, supported by the U.S., went into effect on October 10, following a period of heightened violence. Both sides have consistently accused each other of ceasefire violations. U.S. Vice President JD Vance, during a press briefing, asserted that despite the recent clashes, the ceasefire was still holding, acknowledging that minor skirmishes could occur but expressing confidence in the continued diplomatic efforts.
Earlier reports indicated an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters in Rafah, with Hamas denying responsibility for the initial attack on Israeli troops. The Israeli military had recently conducted what they termed “targeted strikes” against individuals in Gaza identified as planning attacks on Israeli forces.
