Residents of Lekanai Village in Gau have taken a significant step towards enhancing their economic prospects by establishing two new cooperatives focused on improving livelihoods and fostering community development.
The Miramira ni Savura Lele Women’s Cooperative, formed by twenty-four women, aims to diversify and enhance their income-generating activities. Initially starting with mat weaving, the cooperative has expanded its endeavors to include layer chicken farming, thanks to support from the government. Chairperson Tirisa Maibau highlighted the group’s ambitions, stating that they plan to increase their flock to 200 chickens, positioning themselves to become a prominent egg supplier on Gau.
In parallel, the men of the village have created the Vatuvula Cooperative, which aims to establish a shop that will provide essential goods to the local community. This initiative is expected to enhance access to basic supplies, thus improving the overall quality of life for residents.
Together, these two cooperatives represent a concerted effort to boost economic opportunities and foster sustainable development within the Lekanai community, showcasing how collective action can lead to meaningful change. The commitment by both women and men in the village is commendable and highlights the potential for growth and self-sufficiency in rural areas. As these initiatives progress, they could serve as a model for other communities aiming for similar advancements in economic resilience and community support.
