Veteran fly-half Gareth Anscombe is set to take the field against the FIJI Water Flying Fijians in Cardiff tomorrow morning, reclaiming the Wales number 10 jersey for the first time since the previous year’s World Cup.
At 33 years old, Anscombe returns to the spotlight after missing the previous season due to a groin injury. His performance with his new club, Gloucester, has demonstrated his readiness for the international stage once again. Coach Warren Gatland has confirmed that Anscombe will be responsible for the goal-kicking duties in the match against Fiji. Gatland noted that, despite having played 37 internationals over nine years, Anscombe has modified his game following a serious knee injury that sidelined him for two years between 2019 and 2021.
While Gatland acknowledged that Anscombe has lost a bit of pace, he emphasized the value of the player’s experience and communication skills within the squad. “He brings a lot of confidence and self-belief into the squad,” Gatland stated, highlighting Anscombe’s leadership qualities.
Anscombe’s return to the lineup will also allow fellow player Ben Thomas to transition from fly-half back to his familiar role at inside centre, where he will form a new midfield partnership with Max Llewellyn. Gatland expressed his satisfaction with Thomas’ performance, noting his ability to carry the ball effectively and make timely decisions on the field.
For the match against Fiji, Gatland has opted to name only two replacement backs on the bench, which includes Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow. Gatland remains optimistic about Anscombe’s performance but also trusts that Costelow can bring additional skills to the game if needed.
The highly anticipated match is scheduled to kick off at 1:40 am.
This match not only serves as a significant comeback for Anscombe after a challenging period but also showcases the adjustments and positive developments within the team as they prepare for their international challenges. The return of experienced players like Anscombe can foster confidence and inspire upcoming talents, setting a hopeful tone for the future of Welsh rugby.
