Backyard gardener Jasnita Ali, 32, is set to expand her hydroponic farming operation to a commercial level after securing a grant of US$5,000 (F$11,228.75) last week. The funding, awarded by the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) programme, was presented to Ms. Ali at the Hilton Fiji Resort on Denarau.

Ms. Ali plans to utilize the grant to enhance her business by purchasing additional materials to improve her farming infrastructure. “We aim to produce fresh, organic, chemical and pesticide-free vegetables and offer them to consumers at a significantly lower price than current market rates,” she stated.

Her venture, Nature’s Farm Fresh Supplies (NFFS), is a small-scale hydroponics operation based in Chinakoti, Ba, which she launched in September 2022 from her backyard. Motivated by the rising threat of non-communicable diseases in her country, Ms. Ali embarked on her hydroponic farming journey.

“It is essential for customers to adopt a healthy eating approach to foster better lifestyles,” she emphasized. NFFS employs advanced techniques such as the Dutch Bucket System combined with Deep Flow Technique (DFT) hydroponics to cultivate crops on a quarter-acre of land.

“We incorporate innovative technologies like Bluelab’s automated dosing system in our operations,” said Ms. Ali, who is also a mother. “Our hydroponics system allows for a diverse range of crops to be harvested year-round, ensuring a steady supply of fresh, healthy, chemical-free vegetables.”

Additionally, Ms. Ali’s business prioritizes inclusivity by hiring individuals from marginalized communities, including those with disabilities, the LGBTIQ community, and unemployed youth. She shared her struggles as a traditional farmer, facing significant challenges with crop production during flooding and drought periods.

“With the hydroponic system in place, we can grow a variety of vegetables without being impacted by climate variations,” she explained.

The GIST programme provides intensive training designed to empower young innovators and entrepreneurs in the fields of science and technology. This hands-on training and mentorship, conducted by leading U.S. experts, collaborates with local ecosystem partners to foster business growth.
