Former Bula Boys Head Coach Christophe Gamel recently led MacArthur FC, based in Sydney, to a triumphant victory in the Australia Cup, achieving a narrow 1-0 win against Melbourne Victory FC.
In an interview, Gamel took pride in the strong defensive performance of his team, noting their resilience against formidable opponents. He highlighted the effectiveness of their strategy, stating, “Our defence did not break and our goalkeeper did his part to keep a clean sheet.”
Gamel expressed satisfaction with the team’s ability to capitalize on counterattacks, explaining that they took advantage of key moments in the match and successfully withstood pressure from Melbourne’s offensive plays. He emphasized the significance of the win as a reflection of the hard work put in by not just the players but also the coaching and management staff.
Despite being underdogs, Gamel acknowledged the players’ exceptional execution of the game plan, saying, “We were much smaller in comparison, but in football everything is possible.”
Additionally, Gamel extended his support to the Bula Boys as they continue their campaign in the World Cup qualifiers in Papua New Guinea. He praised the current squad, many of whom he helped develop during his tenure, expressing his faith in their capabilities. “I wish the team well and would love to see them qualify for the World Cup and make the country proud,” he said.
This victory underscores the potential for success when hard work, strategic gameplay, and unity towards a common goal come together. The shared passion for the sport reflects hope for not just MacArthur FC, but also for the future of Fijian football as the Bula Boys strive for greatness on the international stage.
