2025 is set to be a significant milestone for women’s cricket in Fiji. The national team will not only partake in the inaugural Four Nations tournament in New Caledonia but will also host the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier for the first time, a historic achievement for the region.
According to Cricket Fiji’s chief executive officer, Sitiveni Rokoro, seven teams will compete in the qualifier held in Fiji, including teams from Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, and Fiji itself. The victor of this tournament will earn a spot in the 2026 women’s World Cup, raising the stakes for all participants.
In preparation for the Four Nations tournament set for March, a national squad will be selected following the completion of the Suva T20 League. This tournament is being organized by Cricket France and promises to be an exciting showcase of talent.
Additionally, the Fiji Secondary School Under-19 tournament will commence in January, presenting young cricketers with a pivotal opportunity for development. Rokoro noted that a training squad for the Under-19 boys has already been formed in preparation for the division U19 World Cup qualifiers in Japan scheduled for April.
There is also considerable enthusiasm surrounding the annual Easter senior men’s tournament, with associations eager to send two teams each. The top eight teams from this tournament will subsequently compete in a super eight event planned for later in the year.
In a positive development for youth cricket, both the Fiji Secondary Schools U19 boys and girls tournaments will be organized, following their revival this year.
The efforts being taken to promote women’s cricket, along with youth development programs, signal a promising future for the sport in Fiji.
