2025 is set to be a pivotal year for women’s cricket in the country with significant events scheduled. The national team will compete in the inaugural Four Nations tournament taking place in New Caledonia. Additionally, Fiji will host the ICC T20 East Asia Pacific qualifier for the first time, as confirmed by Cricket Fiji’s chief executive officer, Sitiveni Rokoro.
In this qualifier, seven teams—including Japan, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, and Fiji—will battle for a place in the 2026 women’s World Cup, with the stakes high for the competing teams. Rokoro mentioned that a national squad will be selected following the Suva T20 League to represent Fiji at the Four Nations tournament slated for March, which is being organized by Cricket France.
Furthermore, in January, the Fiji Secondary Schools Under-19 tournament will be held, and there is a training squad preparing for the U19 boys’ division World Cup qualifiers in Japan scheduled for April.
Rokoro also noted a surge of interest from cricket associations for the annual Easter senior men’s tournament, where each association aims to send two teams. The best eight teams from the Easter games will move on to a super eight tournament later in the year, with dates to be confirmed.
The revived Fiji Secondary Schools U19 girls’ and boys’ tournament is also set to take place after its successful relaunch this year.
This series of tournaments and the growing participation is a testament to the rising prominence of women’s cricket in the region, promising exciting opportunities for athletes in the coming years. This focus on developing talent at both the national and secondary school levels bodes well for the future of cricket in Fiji, fostering a new generation of players who will help elevate the sport even further.
