The Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, has endorsed Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Speaker of the House, as the next President of Fiji. In her statement, Tabuya commended Lalabalavu’s leadership and his advocacy for increased representation of women in leadership roles.

“During my time as Opposition Whip while he was the Leader of Opposition and subsequently the Leader of Government Business, and as Speaker of Parliament, I have witnessed his capable and equitable leadership, along with his dedication to gender equality and women’s leadership,” Tabuya remarked.

She emphasized that she never felt marginalized as a female leader and noted that Lalabalavu often made efforts to ensure her visibility and inclusion in decision-making discussions. “To dismantle the patriarchy, we need male advocates for gender equality. I am confident in stating that the Honourable Speaker is one of these champions, and I believe he will carry this commitment to the State House as the next President of the Republic of Fiji,” she added.

Ratu Naiqama has accepted Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s offer to be the government’s nominee for President, following the withdrawal of Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere’s nomination earlier this week. Parliament is scheduled to vote for the new President on October 31.
