Game-Changer: Multi-Million Dollar Tourism Project Launches at Nasaulevu Island

A major integrated tourism development project is set to launch on Nasaulevu Island. This initiative was confirmed following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), outlining a comprehensive master plan for the island.

Nasaulevu Island is located across from Denarau Port Marina and close to Fantasy Island, covering an area of 747 acres.

Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai, chairman of NDT and commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Joint Task Force, expressed that the signing of the MOU is the beginning of a transformative journey aimed at alleviating poverty among island inhabitants and empowering future generations. He emphasized the significance of this initiative during the ceremony held in Navoci Village, Nadi, last Friday.

The project is anticipated to commence in May next year. “The Revised Masterplan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project will require six to nine months for completion, including a feasibility study,” stated Brigadier-General Gadai. He noted that negotiations with FNPF and ADB regarding a joint venture would begin during the master planning phase, with a follow-up MOU expected once partnership options are confirmed.

According to Gadai, this tourism development project is expected to be distinctive and unparalleled both in Fiji and the wider region. ADB Director General Cathy Marsh revealed that the initial budget allocated for the master plan is $300,000, with specialists projected to begin work on the project by the year’s end.

Minister for Public Works, Meteorology, and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting landowners in enhancing their economic contributions. NDT Secretary Anare Naivutevute highlighted that the master plan aims to create a unique hub for the South Pacific.

The ADB has expressed interest in funding various components of the development, including the construction of resorts, commercial and residential lots, and a cultural center. The proposed cultural center intends to draw tourists to Fiji by providing them the opportunity to immerse themselves in the unique culture and heritage of the nation.
