Former Fijiana captain Lailanie Burnes has been elected to the Fiji Rugby Union board, taking her position during the Annual General Meeting at Novotel Suva Lami Bay. Her appointment comes after the termination of Laijipa Naulivou in February, marking a significant leadership change within the organization.

John Sanday, the board chairman, hailed Burnes’ appointment as a pivotal moment for women’s rugby in Fiji. He emphasized her extensive achievements in the sport, highlighting her roles as a master trainer, player, and organizer who has pioneered women’s rugby in Fiji. “We are thrilled to have her on board, and particularly her skills in the marketing space,” Sanday stated, underscoring the importance of her experience in inspiring young women and girls in the sport.

Burnes, who serves as the chief marketing officer of Extra Supermarket, is a World Rugby accredited level 3 coach and is recognized as a coach educator and trainer by World Rugby. Her vast experience was validated by her nomination from the Nadi Rugby Union and seconded by the Yasawa Rugby Union.

Alongside Burnes’ election, discussions at the AGM included crucial developments such as securing land for a new stadium and expanding high-performance centers and academies. These initiatives showcase the Fiji Rugby Union’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and support for the rugby community.

The enthusiasm surrounding Burnes’ electoral success reflects a growing recognition of women’s contributions to the sport, paving the way for future generations of female athletes. This new chapter for the Fiji Rugby Union is filled with hope and potential as it strives to promote inclusivity and support the development of rugby in the country.
