Former Fijian rugby star Isake Katonibau is advocating for the inclusion of national sports representatives as workers under the forthcoming Work Care Bill 2025. Speaking on behalf of Stonewriters Legacy and addressing the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, he emphasized the need to recognize all current and former athletes who have represented Fiji at the highest level as formal workers, deserving of the same protections and benefits as any other employee under Fijian labor laws.
Katonibau articulated the crucial nature of this recognition, stating, “When they run into that field, they only know we represent Fiji,” highlighting that athletes are representing the country as a whole, rather than individual unions or teams. His passionate appeal reflects the sentiments echoed in his previous advocacy efforts, where he also emphasized the sacrifices athletes make, frequently prioritizing sport over education and career prospects.
This proposal comes amidst a growing awareness of the challenges faced by former athletes after their sport careers end, particularly those who lack the support and compensation that formal employment typically provides. Katonibau pointed out that many national representatives, especially those without other employment, lack injury compensation or support, and he argued for immediate action to correct this disparity.
The response from committee members has been largely supportive, indicating a willingness to consider amendments that would include these athletes in the final legislation. Katonibau expressed that not addressing this now would send a negative legacy to future generations, urging, “We are not asking for favors; we are asking for a return on investment.”
The push for this recognition signals a pivotal moment in how Fiji values and supports its sports heroes, potentially leading to a structural change in athlete welfare that could ensure better rights and protections under the law. As discussions continue, there is hope that this initiative will foster a stronger system to support those who dedicate their lives to representing the nation, ultimately benefiting both the athletes and the broader community they represent.
