Israeli actress Gal Gadot has been honored with Israel’s Genesis Prize, which recognizes her unwavering support for the nation during a challenging time marked by criticism from various corners of the entertainment industry due to the ongoing war in Gaza. Identifying herself as a “proud Jew and a proud Israeli,” Gadot expressed her commitment to use the $1 million prize to support organizations that focus on helping Israel heal from the trauma of its prolonged conflict with Hamas.

The Genesis Prize, often dubbed “the Jewish Nobel” by Time magazine, is awarded annually to individuals who have made significant professional contributions, positively impacted humanity, and upheld Jewish values. Past recipients have donated their awards to various causes, ranging from combating antisemitism and advocating for women’s rights to promoting economic justice.

The recent conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched an attack that resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel, along with the abduction of over 250 individuals. Although initial international sympathy flowed toward Israel, the response to its intensified retaliatory measures soon shifted, leading to widespread condemnation. According to health officials in Gaza, death tolls have soared to over 69,000 Palestinians amid significant destruction across the territory. A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was implemented last month.

As tensions surged and public opinion became increasingly hostile, the backlash against Israel resonated within Hollywood. Prominent figures in the industry, including directors and actors, signed a pledge to boycott Israeli films, further complicating Gadot’s position. Throughout the conflict, she remained an outspoken advocate for Israel, campaigning for the release of hostages and engaging with the families of those captured. This steadfastness has drawn both support and criticism, particularly after the poor box office performance of her recent film, where she suggested that rising anti-Israel sentiment impacted audience reception.

Gadot’s recognition has also sparked discussions about the personal and professional risks involved in taking a stand during such polarized times. Stan Polovets, co-founder and chair of the Genesis Prize Foundation, lauded Gadot’s “moral clarity and unwavering love for Israel,” emphasizing the challenges she has faced due to her advocacy.

As preparations for the awards ceremony commence, the international community eagerly awaits further developments, particularly amid concerns about ongoing humanitarian crises and the need for effective dialogue. The Genesis Prize aims to shine a light on individuals who channel their influence toward positive change, fostering hope for collective healing and progress within and outside Israel.
