Seven opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Group of Nine (G9) will take their oaths today as Ministers and Assistant Ministers in Fiji’s Coalition Government. The swearing-in ceremony is set for 11 am at the State House and will be officiated by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that three MPs from G9 will take on full ministerial roles: Ioane Naivalurua as Minister for Policing, Viliame Naupoto as Minister for Immigration, and Mosese Bulitavu as Minister for Climate Change. Additionally, four other G9 MPs will serve as assistant ministers: Naisa Tuinaceva (Transport), Josaia Niudamu (Justice), Penioni Ravunawa (Health), and Aliki Bia (Information). Meanwhile, two G9 MPs, Alipate Tuicolo and Taito Rokomatu, will not hold any ministerial positions.

This development represents a notable shift in Fiji’s political dynamic. The G9 was established in July 2024 following the deregistration of the FijiFirst party, which has led to a reconfiguration of alliances within the governmental framework. As highlighted by Attorney-General Graham Leung, this situation marks an unprecedented scenario as Fiji’s 2013 Constitution does not specifically address the integration of crossbench MPs into the government, leaving room for new governance structures.

Political analysts believe that this strategic move to include G9 MPs can potentially stabilize Prime Minister Rabuka’s coalition amidst controversies surrounding governmental appointments. Although the Constitution outlines that MPs outside the ruling party must elect a Leader of the Opposition, it lacks guidance on the inclusion of crossbench members, creating what some describe as “uncharted territory.”

The swearing-in of G9 MPs signifies a hopeful opportunity for enhanced political collaboration that may lead to a more inclusive government. By leveraging diverse perspectives and expertise in key areas such as health, justice, and environmental issues, this new alignment could foster comprehensive policies that better serve the public interest.

In summary, the appointment of the G9 MPs marks a pivotal transition in Fiji’s political landscape, paving the way for innovative approaches in governance and collaboration that could ultimately benefit the citizens of Fiji.
