The G9 panel of Independent Members of Parliament has joined the People’s Coalition Government without any preconditions, as confirmed by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. He emphasized that the G9 committed to collaborating with the administration in the public interest during parliamentary discussions.

Rabuka expressed confidence in the G9’s members, especially highlighting Ioane Naivalurua, a former Police Commissioner, as a significant asset in his role as Minister for Policing. He noted that the inclusion of experienced civil servants would help facilitate a smooth transition for the newly appointed ministers.

Minister for Climate Change and Environment, Mosese Bulitavu, reiterated that no terms or demands were made during their acceptance discussions, affirming a straightforward approach to joining the government.

This political shift is noteworthy, particularly following the formation of the G9 in July 2024 after the deregistration of the FijiFirst party. Unlike previous coalitions which involved explicit terms, the G9’s integration marks a new era in Fiji’s political alliances, where crossbench MPs are now directly entering government roles.

Experts view this development as a promising opportunity for improved governance and cooperation. By bringing diverse perspectives into the administration, the G9 is expected to address critical public issues more effectively, including matters concerning health, justice, and climate change.

In conclusion, the integration of the G9 MPs into ministerial roles not only reshapes Fiji’s political environment but also holds the potential for fostering a more inclusive and collaborative governance model. This collaborative spirit could lead to innovative solutions and a stronger response to the public’s needs, ultimately benefiting the citizens of Fiji.
