Future Stars: Fiji Rugby’s Promising Path to Greatness

Fiji is at an exciting stage in its rugby development, and head coach of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, Mick Byrne, emphasizes the importance of patience as the nation continues to grow its talent pool. After observing the Vodafone Super Deans tournament, specifically the semi-finals and finals, Byrne expressed optimism about the future of Fiji rugby, particularly regarding player development.

Byrne noted the impressive talent showcased in the semi-finals between Cuvu College and Nasinu Secondary School, as well as Queen Victoria School against Ratu Navula College. He believes that with time, dedication, and patience, these young players will become significant assets for Fiji rugby.

He remarked, “Some of those young men are just unbelievable,” highlighting the potential of the upcoming generation. Despite the challenges faced by the Under-20 team this year, Byrne is confident that in two years, the team will possess much more talent drawn from the current Deans competition.

Several players from the tournament have already been identified for potential recruitment into the Fijian Drua Academy and development squad. Byrne commended the Drua for their work in establishing an academy level, which he sees as crucial for nurturing local talent.

This development is especially vital given that many promising young rugby players typically leave Fiji for opportunities abroad by the age of 18 or 19, often after completing their secondary education. Byrne pointed out that retaining some of this talent through the Drua academy could keep skilled players in Fiji, making them available for national selection.

Among those being considered for the development squad are Lami High School’s U19 players, including number eight Isoa Laulaba and fullback Ro Mocelutu Macanawai.
