“Future of Fiji’s Counter Narcotics Bureau Revealed”

Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua acknowledges the challenges the Fiji Counter Narcotics Bureau will face, including dealing with “dangerous people,” and the possibility of arming the bureau will be carefully considered in the future.

In an interview with The Fiji Times’ online news portal The Lens@177, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized that the bureau’s primary focus is on being well-equipped. “Whether it’s in the area of information gathering, raiding, tactical operations, or arming them, these are all aspects we will determine in the future,” he stated.

Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted the importance of preparedness and proper equipping for the bureau. “They’ll be dealing with dangerous individuals. We need to ensure they are ready and well-capable,” he remarked. He reiterated that the future decision on arming the bureau would be determined based on evolving needs.

A significant concern, he noted, was revisiting the existing laws to facilitate the bureau’s work. “It’s a long-term endeavor, not an instant solution. I have two years left in my tenure. The next person in my role will need a robust legal framework to work with and amend based on the nature of the threats,” Mr. Tikoduadua explained.

He also stated that proper resourcing of the bureau was critical and mentioned that they were in the process of securing an interim office for the bureau. “We have identified a specific location because it’s essential for them to operate out of a designated area,” he said.

The aim is to establish the bureau as part of a government department under the Ministry of Home Affairs, ensuring it operates as a dedicated authority while being well-equipped and capable.
