Fiji Swimming club representative Hansel McCaig was among many swimmers competing in the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals, which kicked off yesterday at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.

McCaig, representing the Tritons Swimming Club, participated in 11 individual events and four relays. Speaking to The Fiji Times, he shared that the competition had gone well for him, as he secured victories in four individual events and one relay.

He noted the significant number of young swimmers at the competition, expressing optimism about the future of swimming in Fiji. “The younger kids are definitely coming up, and it’s good to see that the future of swimming in Fiji is developing in the right direction,” he commented.

McCaig encouraged more swimmers to join the sport to ensure continuity as senior athletes transition out. He highlighted the importance of healthy competition among age groups.

He praised the younger members of his Tritons team for their impressive performances, attributing their success to dedicated training. “The kids in our club are doing very well, and it’s good to see some talent that has definitely been honed over the past months,” he said.

According to McCaig, the progress of these young swimmers pushes others to improve, creating a mutually beneficial environment. “It generates better stimulation in terms of development, and as they get better, they motivate us to improve as well, which makes for better role models—it’s a win-win for both sides,” he added.
