Fiji Swimming Club representative Hansel McCaig was among the many swimmers competing in the Fiji Swimming Age Group Nationals, which commenced yesterday at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.

McCaig, who swims for the Tritons Swimming Club, is participating in 11 individual events and four relays. In an interview, he shared that he had a successful start to the competition, securing victories in four individual events and one relay.

He noted the impressive turnout of young swimmers at the event, suggesting that their involvement is a promising sign for the future of swimming in Fiji. “The younger kids are definitely coming up, and it’s good to see that the future of swimming in Fiji is developing in the right direction,” he said.

McCaig expressed a desire for more swimmers to join the sport, emphasizing the importance of fostering talent to carry on the legacy as senior swimmers eventually retire. He praised the young members of his team, the Tritons, for their outstanding performances, which he attributed to their dedicated training.

“The kids in our club are doing very well, and it’s great to see the talent that has been nurtured over the past months,” he stated. He added that the development of younger swimmers motivates others to improve their skills as well. “It generates better stimulation in terms of development, and when they get better, they push us to improve too, making us better role models. It’s a win-win situation for both sides,” McCaig concluded.
