Future Nurse’s Dream: A Journey Through FNU Open Day

Meretinai Vaturaiyawa, a student from Nakorotubu Secondary School, is determined to pursue her tertiary education at Fiji National University (FNU), with aspirations of becoming a nurse.

During her visit to the FNU Open Day, she focused on Food Science and explored the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science. “I am eager to learn about the opportunities in the medical field,” said the 16-year-old.

Vaturaiyawa noted that there is a health center in her village of Namarai, located in Nakorotubu, Ra, but currently, no one from her community works there. “It is my aim that one day I’ll be stationed at the health center in Namarai as a nurse,” she expressed.

She found the information presented at the FNU Open Day in Nasinu to be highly beneficial. “I’ve chosen FNU as my future tertiary institution after the experience I’ve received today,” she stated.

Vaturaiyawa shared that her school was established in 2020 and she started in Year Nine in 2021. However, she faced challenges this academic year, as there were no Biology and Chemistry teachers for the first two terms. “We finally have a Biology and Chemistry teacher in Term Three, but now there is no Home Economics teacher,” she explained. In the absence of a Home Economics instructor, the vice-principal provides worksheets for the students in those classes.
