Nakorotubu Secondary School student Meretinai Vaturaiyawa is determined to attend Fiji National University (FNU) for her higher education. She aspires to become a nurse.
“My focus during the FNU Open Day was on Food Science, and I also explored the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Science,” Vaturaiyawa stated. “I’m eager to learn about the opportunities in the medical field.”
At just 16 years old, she notes that there is a health center in Namarai Village, Nakorotubu, Ra, but there are currently no employees from Namarai or her village of Veidrala working there. “It is my goal to one day serve as a nurse at the health center in Namarai,” she expressed.
Vaturaiyawa mentioned that she received valuable insights during the Open Day held in Nasinu. “After the experience I had today, I have chosen FNU as my future tertiary institution,” she added.
She shared that Nakorotubu Secondary School was established in 2020, and she enrolled in Year Nine in 2021. However, she highlighted some challenges faced by her school, noting that there were no Biology and Chemistry teachers during the first two terms of this year. “We finally have a Biology and Chemistry teacher in Term Three, but now we lack a Home Economics teacher,” she said, explaining that the vice-principal has been providing worksheets for Home Economics classes.
