Students from Yat Sen Secondary School had the opportunity to explore Fiji’s governance and history during a recent field trip to State House, where they were welcomed by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu. This visit, which included Year 10 Social Science and senior History students, aimed to enhance the students’ understanding of the importance of State House and the constitutional responsibilities of the Head of State.
During the visit, President Lalabalavu addressed the students, urging them to cultivate a keen interest in national history and leadership roles. He emphasized the importance of integrity in leadership, stating, “As future leaders, you have a responsibility to learn, to question, and to lead with honesty, compassion, and respect.”
The interactive session allowed students to engage with the President, asking questions about his constitutional duties, his experiences, and the functionality of Fiji’s government, including its Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary branches. Reflecting upon his varied roles in politics, President Lalabalavu shared insights on how these positions contribute to the country’s governance.
The field trip also included a tour of the historic State House, where students learned about its architectural significance and its role in Fiji’s political history. Concluding the visit, President Lalabalavu encouraged students to value their education as a key to building a stronger Fiji, stating, “Education opens doors to opportunity and empowers you to contribute meaningfully to our country’s development. You are the future of Fiji – lead with integrity.”
In light of similar events where students from various schools have visited State House, these educational experiences appear to be crucial in reinforcing the importance of civic engagement among Fijian youth. Such initiatives not only enrich their knowledge but also inspire future leaders to actively participate in their nation’s development.
This educational approach reflects a growing commitment in Fiji to engage students in understanding their governance and history, fostering a generation that is well-prepared to contribute positively to society.
