Abigail Ana Tukila Scott, a Year One student at Toga District School in Nausori, earned the top prize for creativity during the World Book and Copyright Week character parade held on Friday. Her remarkable costume was crafted entirely from The Fiji Times newspaper, highlighting both her creativity and resourcefulness.

Her mother, Akanisi Tamanivalu, expressed the reasoning behind their choice, stating, “We opted for The Fiji Times because it’s a newspaper that people value.” She emphasized that the teachers had encouraged parents to create costumes, making the newspaper an obvious choice for their project. Tamanivalu also acknowledged the newspaper’s role in daily life, noting, “People read The Fiji Times every day for the latest news and articles. It has brought people together across different age groups.”

This year’s theme for World Book and Copyright Day centered on “The role of literature in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” which further underscores the importance of creativity and expression through literature and art in contributing to broader societal goals.

This celebration not only showcases the talents of young students like Abigail but also emphasizes the importance of literature and media in fostering community connections and supporting sustainable development initiatives. It’s heartwarming to see children engage in such creative expressions, promising a bright future filled with innovative thinkers.
