Former national boxer and Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) board member Visila Kolitapa is optimistic about the future of her children, Merewalesi and Joe Kolitapa, as they recently showcased their talents in international competition. Their impressive victories against Australian opponents during the Tri-Nations event last Saturday at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva have ignited hopes for more international exposure.

Mere secured a unanimous points decision victory over Ivy Dawson in the juniors (15-16 years) 57-60kg lightweight category, while her brother Joe triumphed through a split points decision against Oliver Leslie in the light middleweight division. Joe’s opponent, Leslie, had previously knocked out his Fijian opponent on the first day of the competition, making Joe’s victory even more notable.

Kolitapa credited their success to rigorous training and dedication, mentioning that her children had made significant sacrifices, including losing 5kg in two weeks to meet weight requirements. She expressed her aspirations for their selection for an upcoming tour in Australia, highlighting the effort that went into their preparations.

Their father, Temo Kolitapa, a former national amateur boxer, shared insights into their daily routines, stating that his children train at 4:30 AM before school. He emphasized that regardless of the outcomes, their hard work and discipline are commendable, reinforcing the importance of prioritizing education alongside sports.

Merewalesi Kolitapa also stands out in her diverse athletic pursuits, having represented Fiji in AFL as a fullback for the Sigatoka Methodist College Under-16 team. This multifaceted talent underscores the emerging opportunities for Fijian youth in sports, particularly for women, who are gradually breaking traditional gender barriers.

The Kolitapas are part of the Butterfly Boxing Club, which actively trains both amateur and professional boxers, contributing to the growth of the boxing community in Fiji. The family’s commitment to support their children’s boxing journey reflects a broader hope within Fiji’s sports community, as local organizations like the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association continue to provide platforms for talent development.

In a landscape where emerging athletes face challenges, the dedication shown by young boxers like the Kolitapas illustrates their resilience and potential for future success on international stages. Their story resonates with many young athletes in Fiji, showcasing how determination and family support can foster a brighter sporting future.
