Futsal Fever: Suva Muslim College Kicks Off Championship with a Bang!

The 2025 Extra Supermarket Fiji Southern Secondary Schools Futsal Championship commenced last weekend at the Fiji Football Academy in Vatuwaqa. The tournament opened with an exhilarating match where Suva Muslim College celebrated a strong 7-2 victory against Dudley High School, marking a promising start to the competition.

Launched last year, the futsal championship has witnessed a significant increase in participation from schools within the southern division. The event now features both boys’ and girls’ teams, reflecting a noteworthy rise in interest for futsal in Fiji. Justin Amron Chandra, the under-18 head coach of Suva Muslim College, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating that they performed even better than in training. Chandra has high hopes for this year’s journey, aiming to improve upon last year’s semi-final finish.

Chandra emphasized the psychological aspect of the game, noting that a strong mindset is key to success in competitive sports. He mentioned that, with many players observing Ramadan, it’s crucial to maintain discipline and structure throughout the matches to effectively execute their game plan. His encouraging words to players remind them to stay humble and focused on their goals.

The Fiji Football Association’s commitment to expanding the championship, especially into the Western and Northern Divisions, serves to further elevate the competitive landscape and nurture young talent. As the championship progresses, it is anticipated to cultivate not only skills and competitive spirit among participants but also essential values such as teamwork and camaraderie, which are vital for personal growth and community engagement.

As the tournament continues, Suva Muslim College looks set to build on this impressive opening victory, fostering hope for their aspirations in the championship while contributing to the vibrant sports culture in Fiji. Events like this play a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of athletes, inspiring a bright future for futsal in the region.
