The Supercool Vatukoro under 18-21 rugby team has been actively engaging in fundraising efforts to prepare for the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival, which is hosted at the Wairiki Parish Grounds on Taveuni Island. Their efforts have included selling $10 kaji playing cards to raise the necessary funds, which allowed them to make the journey from Nausori, Nalawa, Ra to Wairiki.

Team coach Ilai Nameke spoke to The Fiji Times after their pool match against St. Teresa Naba, where they narrowly lost 5-7, but achieved a decisive victory against Naselesele, winning 24-0. Nameke expressed gratitude to the parents and the community of Nausori Village for their support in helping the boys attend the tournament, mentioning that their fundraising efforts included a promotional campaign for a bag of chicken.

Despite facing geographical challenges that impacted their preparation, Nameke remained optimistic, noting that their isolation could lead to unforeseen benefits. He acknowledged the hurdles they have encountered but highlighted that good things often come from overcoming such difficulties.

A notable achievement for the team is the selection of one of their members for the national under-20 team, showcasing the talent that is being nurtured in the Vatukoro community. The Supercool Vatukoro team is currently competing in Pool 4 of the U18-21 category alongside teams like Naselesele, Davetalevu, and St. Teresa Naba.

This story reflects the resilience and community spirit that often underpins grassroots sports, reminding us that teamwork and support can propel young athletes toward greater opportunities.

In summary, the Vatukoro team’s journey to the Wairiki 7s demonstrates their determination to overcome challenges through community support and collective efforts, providing hope for young athletes aiming to make their mark in rugby.
