The Fijian Government, in collaboration with the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji (TAF), is making strides towards establishing a sustainable funding model aimed at enhancing the telecommunications sector in Fiji. This initiative comes as part of TAF’s strategic plan for 2025-2029, which highlights the urgent need for additional financial resources to support its ambitious goals.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica emphasized the importance of appropriately resourcing TAF to empower it in achieving its strategic objectives. He acknowledged the financial challenges faced by regulatory bodies but reassured the public that the government is dedicated to ensuring TAF has the necessary funding to thrive.
“The ministry understands how vital a well-funded regulatory body is for creating a vibrant and competitive telecommunications market,” Mr. Kamikamica stated. He pointed out that TAF requires adequate funding, stability, and certainty in its budget to effectively navigate the rapidly changing telecom landscape.
Additionally, TAF is set to tackle operational challenges, including a backlog of audits and annual reports, with plans to clear these by the conclusion of the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The authority is also rolling out new corporate policies, including a comprehensive Finance and Accounting Policies and Procedures Manual, alongside a revamped Financial Management System to boost operational efficiency.
The launch of TAF’s first strategic plan signifies a pivotal step forward for the telecommunications sector, promising to enhance regulatory capabilities and ultimately benefit consumers and service providers alike.
