Authorities are actively searching for a suspect who is said to have killed a fellow inmate inside a police cell in Savusavu on November 5. Reports indicate that the two were placed in the same cell, where the suspect allegedly attacked his cellmate with a piece of timber, resulting in the victim’s death.
Following a court appearance, the suspect was sent to St Giles Mental Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. However, he managed to escape from the facility, prompting a police manhunt. Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu confirmed that efforts are underway to recapture the suspect.
Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has instructed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Suva to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident and discern the circumstances that led to the altercation.
