Families in Fiji are set to experience an increase in their fuel expenses beginning tomorrow, with prices for fuel, gas, and kerosene on the rise.

According to the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), the new prices for December 2024 are determined by the cost of refined fuel and butane imports made by local companies in October 2024. Specifically, the price of unleaded petrol is rising from $2.62 to $2.67 per liter. Diesel will see a 9-cent increase, bringing it to $2.27 per liter, while the price of premix fuel will rise by 8 cents to $2.51 per liter. Additionally, kerosene prices will increase by 7 cents to reach $1.74 per liter.

In terms of gas, a 12kg cylinder will now cost $40.92 after a $10.10 increase, and a 4.5kg cylinder will go up by 38 cents to $15.35. LPG prices will also climb by 8 cents, resulting in a cost of $3.16.

The FCCC noted that these price changes are influenced by shifts in the Means of Platts Singapore, as well as fluctuations in international freight rates and foreign exchange rates.

While these increases may pose challenges for families, it’s important to consider that such adjustments are often a reflection of global market trends and economic factors. Families are encouraged to seek out fuel-efficient practices, and with ongoing efforts for renewable energy alternatives, there is hope for more stable and sustainable energy prices in the future.

In summary, the coming price hikes in fuel and gas will require families to adjust their budgets, but understanding the underlying reasons may help in adapting to these changes.
