Fuel Prices Set to Rise: What You Need to Know!

Prices for kerosene, diesel, and gas in Fiji are set to increase starting tomorrow, January 13, as confirmed by the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC). The adjustments reflect fluctuations in international fuel markets and local economic conditions.

Effective tomorrow, kerosene will increase by four cents, bringing its price to $1.78 per liter, while diesel will also see a similar four-cent hike, now costing $2.31 per liter. Fortunately, the prices for motor spirit and premix fuels will remain unchanged at $2.67 and $2.51 per liter, respectively.

The new pricing structure for gas is as follows:
– 4.5kg gas cylinder: $15.53 (up 18 cents)
– 12kg gas cylinder: $41.42 (up 50 cents)
– Bulk gas: $3.20/kg (up four cents)
– Autogas: $2.25/litre (up three cents)

These increases in prices for kerosene and diesel are largely attributed to unfavorable movements in the international refined fuel prices and a strengthened US dollar against the Fijian dollar. On the other hand, gas price adjustments are primarily due to rising butane contract prices, although decreased international freight rates have somewhat alleviated the impact.

While these adjustments may exert additional pressure on household budgets, they also present an opportunity for consumers to reevaluate their energy consumption practices. This scenario encourages the adoption of more energy-efficient alternatives and renewable energy solutions, which not only help manage rising costs but also promote sustainability and environmental responsibility.

In conclusion, while the hike in fuel prices poses notable challenges, it serves as an important reminder for the community to pursue innovations and practices that foster a more sustainable energy future in Fiji.
