The Civil High Court in Suva has dismissed the appeal application made by Pawan Deo, the former financial officer of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), against the Trust Board. This decision came after Deo opted to withdraw his case against the FRU.
The FRU had previously initiated legal proceedings against Deo, his wife, and their business, Sports Supplies Limited, concerning allegations of embezzlement, claiming approximately $7,000 in damages. The situation had already been addressed in the Nasinu Magistrate’s Court.
Following the withdrawal of the FRU’s case on July 24, Deo filed a counterclaim seeking compensation related to the financial and emotional strain he attributed to the FRU’s actions. During the latest court session, Deo expressed his frustrations regarding delays and miscommunication with the Civil High Court’s registry, which he claimed caused him considerable back-and-forth travel between Suva and Nasinu while trying to obtain necessary documents. Ultimately, he decided to withdraw his application based on his attorney’s guidance and plans to submit a new one later.
FRU’s counsel, Tomasi Tuitoga, stated that the organization was amenable to Deo’s withdrawal but requested $200 in recovery costs to be paid by him before November 27.
This case highlights the complexities of legal proceedings and the importance of clear communication among parties involved. Moving forward, both sides appear open to resolution, which may pave the way for a more amicable conclusion to the dispute, fostering a sense of hope for improved relations within the local sports community.
Summary: The Civil High Court has dismissed Pawan Deo’s appeal against the FRU following his withdrawal of the case amid ongoing legal disputes. The FRU seeks $200 in compensation for costs incurred. Both parties are navigating the complexities of the legal process, indicating potential for a more constructive resolution in the future.
