FRPA Europe launches in France to safeguard Fijian rugby players abroad

The Fiji Rugby Players Association (FRPA) has made significant strides with the completion of a pioneering Northern Tour that has led to the establishment of its first overseas branch, FRPA Europe. This marks a pivotal advancement in enhancing support systems for Fijian players competing abroad.

In a collaborative effort with the Fiji Rugby Union, the tour was characterized by high-level discussions with the French Rugby Federation, various professional clubs, and key stakeholders, all focused on player welfare. FRPA Chairman Ilivasi Tabua commended the partnership that made this tour possible, emphasizing that it reflects a renewed commitment from Fiji’s rugby administration to prioritize the well-being of players.

FRPA Europe will be located in France and will be led by former Flying Fijians players Sisa Koyamaibole, Sunia Koto, Timoci Naquasa, and Masivanua Matadigo. This new division aims to offer direct assistance to Fijian players across Europe while fostering connections within the Fijian communities in the region.

Tabua noted that the FRPA and FRU are collaborating with the French Rugby Federation to create structured transition programs designed to support players entering professional careers overseas, as well as strategies for their lives following their rugby careers. This is particularly timely given the increasing scrutiny regarding agent misconduct, as French clubs have reported cases of exploitation of Fijian players. In response, the FRPA plans to investigate these practices and implement measures to hold agents accountable for their actions.

Additionally, the tour laid the groundwork for Fiji’s Tier One fixtures set to take place in Europe next year. FRPA Europe is expected to play a crucial role in logistics and support for players during this period.

Tabua confidently described the tour as merely the beginning, expressing that the Association intends to expedite efforts in protecting and expanding opportunities for Fijian players and rugby legends throughout Europe. The establishment of FRPA Europe signifies a hopeful future for Fijian rugby as it strengthens its global presence and enhances the welfare of its players.
