Naeca Vatanitawake, an athlete from Yasawa, is fully embracing the excitement of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, held at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Reflecting on his journey, Vatanitawake shared the challenges of traveling from his village of Yasawa-i-Rara to the competition, emphasizing the hard work that led him and his team to seek medals.
He contrasted life in the city with that in his village, noting that in Suva, resources and opportunities are much more accessible. “Everything is accessible here; back in the village, we have to look for things so that we can feed ourselves,” he remarked. Despite the difficulties faced by their athletic squad, including financial constraints and rigorous training, Vatanitawake expressed faith in his team’s potential.
Vatanitawake, who recently excelled academically as the dux of Bukama village school and has passed the Fiji Year Eight examinations, remained grateful for the support of his family, who encouraged him to enjoy the experience. He celebrated his achievements with them and looked forward to a family feast in his honor.
He also urged his peers to balance both academics and sports, suggesting that if one struggles in academics, they can find strength in athletics. A passionate rugby player himself, Vatanitawake aspires to play for the Flying Fijians, inspired by his favorite player, Caleb Muntz.
