From Village Roots to the Silver Screen: Adi Tulia Nacola’s Inspiring Film Journey

Spread the love

Adi Tulia Nacola stands as a remarkable example of the increasing presence of young iTaukei women in the business sector. An accomplished serial entrepreneur and author of three novels, Nacola has now ventured into film production with her debut short film, “Bubu Belo.” This 25-minute film, produced in collaboration with Fiji-based Bure Productions, is performed in the iTaukei language and centers around the lives of two characters, Bubu and Tamara, who reside in a quaint wooden cottage by the sea.

Set in the picturesque Verevere Village in Ra, the film explores themes of survival and respect for nature as Bubu teaches Tamara how to fish and cultivate his own food. The storyline takes a turn when an unexpected visitor from their past confronts Bubu with a challenging choice, highlighting the struggle between reliance on the land and the lure of urban opportunities that many indigenous communities face.

Nacola expresses her belief that while urban centers may offer numerous opportunities, there is immense value in staying connected to one’s roots and heritage. “Bubu Belo” aims to reinforce this connection, fostering storytelling and sharing of traditional wisdom between generations. It plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between elders and youth, particularly those who may have lost touch with their language.

The film will premiere at the Film Fiji office in Suva on January 16, 2025. Following the premiere, it is set to be screened in various villages in Ra, with the support of Film Fiji. These screenings will not only share the poignant story of Bubu and Tamara but also emphasize the significance of understanding one’s origins and cultivating a sense of identity and belonging within the community.

In a world increasingly moved by urbanization, Nacola’s work serves as a hopeful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the value of storytelling. It encourages a return to roots while integrating with modern aspirations, ultimately aiding future generations in forging their identities.
