Adi Tulia Nacola, a prominent serial entrepreneur, exemplifies the rising profile of young iTaukei women in the business landscape. Recently, Nacola has ventured into film production, adding to her impressive portfolio that includes furniture building and authoring three novels.
Her debut short film, “Bubu Belo,” produced in collaboration with Fiji-based Bure Productions, showcases her talents as a writer, producer, and director. The film, spanning 25 minutes, is performed in the iTaukei language and centers around two main characters, Bubu and Tamarra, who dwell in a small wooden cottage by the sea.
Set in Verevere Village, Ra, Nacola’s hometown, the narrative focuses on Bubu as she teaches Tamarra vital survival skills, such as fishing and cultivating food from the land. Through this bond, Bubu imparts lessons on independence and a deep respect for the environment. However, their lives take a turn when an unexpected visitor from their past forces Bubu to confront a challenging choice.
The film addresses the critical tension between traditional land reliance and the allure of urban life, a struggle that has impacted indigenous communities for years. Adi Tulia emphasizes that while opportunities exist in big cities, there is also immense value in staying connected to one’s roots and heritage, highlighting the importance of understanding one’s origins.
“Bubu Belo” serves as a bridge for storytelling within families, cultivating connections between elders and youth, especially for those who may be re-establishing their ties to the iTaukei language. The film underscores the pivotal role of storytelling as a teaching medium, fostering respect for one another and the land.
The premiere of “Bubu Belo” will take place at the Film Fiji office in Suva, followed by screenings in various villages and communities across Ra. Sponsored by Film Fiji, these screenings aim to share Bubu and Tamarra’s journey and reinforce the importance of cultural identity and belonging.
This initiative not only celebrates local talent but also paves the way for future stories that resonate with tradition and community values. Adi Tulia Nacola’s achievements inspire hope for a brighter future where cultural narratives continue to thrive.
