Kaveni Roseru, a front row player for the Silktails, is making strides in his rugby journey, recently participating in the Under-19 Senikau club at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament. Roseru, who is more familiar with rugby league, expressed that playing sevens rugby is a new experience for him.

Traditionally, he played flanker for Naitasiri Secondary School during the Deans rugby competition. This dual experience in both rugby league for the school’s U19 team and rugby union has enriched his skills as an athlete. He recounted the challenges faced previously when his team lost to Ratu Kadavulevu School in the quarterfinals of both competitions.

Roseru’s talents caught the attention of Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata after the U19 finals, leading to his representation of the Junior Fiji Bati team against the Australian Schoolboys last year. His talent and hard work earned him a place on the Kaiviti Silktails roster, where he is now in his second year participating in the Jersey Flegg competition.

At just 19 years old and hailing from Nukuloa village, Roseru attributes his achievements to his strong faith and the support of his family, who constantly remind him to remain patient and determined in pursuing his rugby aspirations. He encourages other youth to listen to their parents, suggesting that adhering to their advice will open doors to new opportunities.

Roseru reflects on his commitment to training, sharing that he often walked or ran from his village to school, never losing hope in his potential as a rugby player. He harbors aspirations of securing a contract overseas in the National Rugby League (NRL).

The fast-paced nature of the Jersey Flegg competition has taught Roseru valuable lessons about the sport. In times of doubt, he finds motivation in his parents’ struggles and emphasizes discipline as a cornerstone of his personal development, both on and off the field. He looks up to Fiji Bati second rower Viliame Kikau as a role model and hopes to represent the national team in the future.

This story showcases a young athlete’s journey filled with dedication, resilience, and ambition. Roseru’s narrative serves as an inspiring reminder of the potential that comes with hard work and faith. As more talented players like him emerge, the future of rugby in Fiji looks bright.
