Yasawa athlete Naece Vatanitawake is embracing the vibrant atmosphere of the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games held yesterday at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. Reflecting on his journey, Vatanitawake shared the challenges he faced traveling from his remote village of Yasawa-i-Rara.

“It’s quite a struggle to come all the way from the village,” he remarked, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to compete. He noted the significant differences between life in Suva, where amenities are readily available, and the challenges of sourcing food in his village.

Sprinting is Vatanitawake’s passion, and he feels fortunate to have the strength to participate in this competition. Despite encountering hurdles during their training, including financial constraints, Vatanitawake and his teammates remained optimistic about their chances.

His family has been incredibly supportive, with his parents encouraging him to enjoy the experience. Proudly, Vatanitawake shared that he was honored as the dux of Bukama village school, an achievement that brought excitement to his family, who are planning a celebratory feast. Additionally, he successfully passed the Fiji Year Eight examination.

Vatanitawake encourages his peers to balance their academic pursuits with sports, advising those struggling academically to consider focusing on athletics as a motivating factor. He also plays rugby as a first-five eight, aspiring to emulate his favorite player, Caleb Muntz, from the Flying Fijians.
