Naecae Vatanitawake, a dedicated athlete from Yasawa, is fully embracing the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, taking place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. The journey from his village of Yasawa-i-Rara to the capital has not been an easy one, but Vatanitawake is eager to seize this opportunity and compete for medals.

Reflecting on his experiences, Vatanitawake remarked on the stark contrasts between life in Suva and his village, particularly the accessibility of resources in the city. “Everything is accessible here; back in the village we have to look for things to feed ourselves,” he shared.

Sprinting is a passion for Vatanitawake, who expressed gratitude for his ability to compete in this spirited event. He acknowledged the challenges his athletics squad encountered during their preparations, notably the financial constraints and the intensity of their training regimen. Nevertheless, their determination remains steadfast.

In a moment of pride, Vatanitawake mentioned his recognition as the dux of Bukama village school, a feat he initially believed was beyond him. His family is celebrating this achievement, marking it with a special feast. He also successfully passed the Fiji Year Eight examination, highlighting his dedication to both education and athletics.

With a message for his peers, Vatanitawake advocated for hard work in academics and sports, encouraging those who might struggle academically to pursue athletic endeavors. Additionally, he plays as first-five eight in rugby, aspiring to follow in the footsteps of his favorite player, Flying Fijians’ Caleb Muntz, with hopes of becoming a Flying Fijian himself one day.

Vatanitawake’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and the pursuit of dreams, serving as an inspiration to young athletes everywhere. His dedication showcases the importance of balancing education and sports, and the importance of community support in achieving personal goals.

Overall, this event not only highlights individual accomplishments but also strengthens the spirit of unity and motivation among young athletes in Fiji, offering a hopeful glimpse into the future of sports in the region.
