Jackie Malvirlani, originally from Vanuatu’s Malekula island, navigated a transformative educational journey catalyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially aspiring to a career in medicine or dentistry, her focus shifted to health promotion — a decision she now cherishes.
Raised in a culturally diverse family, Jackie cherishes her dual heritage, which has significantly shaped her identity and perspectives. “I wouldn’t say it’s a challenge, but rather an experience that has influenced who I am today,” she shared, expressing gratitude for her family’s encouragement to embrace both cultures. This upbringing has instilled a sense of responsibility in her, especially being the eldest of five siblings.
Jackie’s academic journey began at Peter Pan Grammar School in Vanuatu, after which she completed her primary and secondary education in Fiji. Graduating from Jai Narayan College in 2020, she recalls her class’s competitiveness but also the bonds formed during that time. “I’m glad to still be connected with most of them,” she noted, highlighting the ongoing support within her peer group.
Her transition to studying at Fiji National University in the School of Public Health and Primary Care was motivated by a burgeoning interest in health promotion, as she realized her place in the health sector, particularly emphasized during the pandemic. “Initially, I reassured myself that as long as I remained in the health sector I’d be content, but my interest in the course grew over time,” she explained.
Jackie’s journey is marked by resilience and a pursuit of knowledge. She vividly recalls the inspiration derived from her grandaunt, a doctor in Vanuatu, whose influence fueled her desire to learn about healthcare. This passion coupled with her grandfather’s encouraging words before his passing has been a driving force in her educational pursuits.
Her graduation last year was a proud moment, signifying not just an academic milestone but a testament to her perseverance. “It was an emotional moment for me, and I’m thankful to God, my family, teachers, and friends,” she said.
Currently, Jackie is interning with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, furthering her practical knowledge and experience in the field. She plans to continue her education and emphasizes the importance of resilience, encouraging others to persevere through challenges: “Be optimistic and steady in your faith, never doubt yourself and your abilities.”
In addition to her studies, Jackie enjoys traveling, reading, and volunteering, embodying a well-rounded approach to personal growth and community engagement. Her story serves as an inspiration, especially for young individuals navigating their paths amid challenges, affirming that with determination and faith, they can achieve their aspirations, creating a promising outlook for the future.
