Ponipate Loganimasi made a courageous decision to pursue rugby instead of attending university, a choice wholeheartedly supported by his father, Joeli Kalougata. In less than two years with the national sevens team, Loganimasi has quickly made a name for himself on the international rugby stage.
This year, he achieved remarkable success by winning a silver medal at the Olympics with Fiji’s men’s rugby sevens team. In addition, he earned recognition as the only Fijian player selected for the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year, an honor revealed recently.
Loganimasi’s impressive trajectory continued in September when he made his debut for the Flying Fijians during the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan, scoring two tries in a triumphant 41-17 victory that helped Fiji retain the cup. He has also signed with the Fijian Drua rugby team, marking another significant step in his career.
At 26 years old, Loganimasi hails from the village of Nabua in Cakaudrove, although he originally comes from Lovoni in Ono-i-Lau. His father expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments during an interview from Savusavu, highlighting the support he received from his family to follow the academic path of his older siblings at Brigham Young University in Utah. However, Loganimasi’s passion for rugby led him in a different direction.
Kalougata shared his advice, emphasizing the importance of trusting in God and putting in hard work. He noted, “If rugby will put food on the table for you, I’ll support your decision.” This guidance helps illustrate the values of faith and determination that have contributed to Loganimasi’s success.
In addition to his rugby achievements, Loganimasi is a Coca-Cola Games gold medallist, having won the 200m event during his time at Navatu Secondary School. His sports versatility is apparent, as he also participated in rugby and indoor basketball in high school.
Joining Loganimasi in the World Rugby Dream Team are distinguished players such as Selvyn Davids (South Africa), Antoine Dupont (France), Aaron Grandidier Nkanang (France), Terry Kennedy (Ireland), Nathan Lawson (Australia), and Matías Osadczuk (Argentina).
Loganimasi’s rapid rise through the ranks showcases not only his talent and dedication but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes pursuing their dreams, illustrating that with hard work and faith, great achievements are possible.
