In a heartwarming story of resilience and achievement, Esther Lusiana Kuva, the head girl and top student (dux) at Nakasi High School, shared her inspiring journey of overcoming personal loss. The 18-year-old student from Korovisilou Village dedicated her success to her late mother, who passed away from bone cancer last year, just before she took her Year 12 Fiji School Leaving Certificate examination.
Overwhelmed with emotion upon hearing her name announced as the dux, Ms. Kuva reflected on the challenges she faced while balancing her studies and responsibilities during a difficult time for her family. “It was hard trying to juggle my school, my role in the school and all; at this point, I’m even shocked to be scooping all these awards,” she said.
Despite the hurdles, Ms. Kuva expressed deep gratitude for the support she received from her family, particularly her aunt and uncle, who took them in during their tough times, as well as her grandmother, who has been a significant source of encouragement. Ms. Kuva remarked, “Although my mother isn’t here physically, I know she is here with me spiritually.”
Her determination paid off, as she was recognized with multiple awards, including the Year 13 prize, a leadership award, distinctions in various subjects, and the prestigious title of dux for 2024.
Celebrating alongside her, Ms. Kuva’s family, including her supportive 71-year-old grandmother, Ana Qitialewa, shared their pride in her accomplishments. Ms. Qitialewa noted her granddaughter’s discipline, highlighting her dedication that allowed her to manage a challenging daily commute while maintaining her academic focus. “I know her mom would be so proud of her right now,” she stated.
Looking ahead, Ms. Kuva plans to pursue a career in the medical field, contemplating a choice between nursing school and dental care. She offered advice based on her journey, emphasizing that “sacrifice and dedication is the key, and in everything you do, put God first and He will do the rest.”
