Chris Vanualailai is paving the way in environmental entrepreneurship through his venture, Envirotech Solutions Pacific (ESP), founded to address critical gaps in environmental data in Fiji and the Pacific region. With a background in environmental consultancy, Vanualailai recognized the urgent need for reliable data on air and water quality during his previous work at his father’s consultancy firm.

In an interview, he expressed that despite widespread discussions about climate change, concrete data was lacking, which was crucial for effective mitigation strategies. This prompted him to establish ESP, aiming to provide accurate, near-real-time environmental data for local businesses, government agencies, and researchers. By offering these services locally, ESP significantly reduces the costs incurred by businesses that typically relied on outsourcing testing services to Australia and New Zealand.

However, Vanualailai’s journey has not been without its challenges. He faced personal tragedy shortly after launching ESP in 2023 when he lost his wife. This loss served as both a blow and a motivating force for him to persevere with his dream. Just weeks after her passing, he participated in the 2023 Top Executive Conference’s BizPitchComp, although he felt unprepared. He made a vow to return in 2024 to present his vision more effectively, which he accomplished by winning the Innovation Category at the competition.

ESP is leading several groundbreaking initiatives, including a Free Air Quality Map and a Site-Specific Water Quality Map of Fiji, providing vital environmental data for public health and resource management. Additionally, the company plans to roll out a Noise Data Map and a Marine Spatial Planning Map, enhancing its contributions to environmental management.

Through its efforts, ESP has helped local businesses cut environmental testing costs by up to 90%, enabling quicker decision-making based on locally relevant data. Vanualailai has ambitions to expand his operations across the Pacific and even into the United States, supported by recent partnerships, including one with Google to integrate artificial intelligence into environmental sustainability projects.
