Faisal Syafii’s journey over the past 20 years is a remarkable tale of resilience and hope. On December 26, 2004, he lost everything—his home, business, and wife, Siti Syamsiah—during the catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami that claimed over 250,000 lives across 14 countries. Yet, amidst the tragedy, Faisal managed to save his two daughters, Eka and Selyna.

That fateful morning began with a special birthday moment as Siti brought Faisal coffee before the earth shook violently beneath them. The relatively small initial earthquake was soon followed by a much larger one, triggering the tsunami. As they fled their collapsing home, Faisal vividly recalls the chaos around them, with people running and debris flying. They sought refuge in a nearby shop, only to be separated as the building fell apart.

What followed was despair mixed with a fierce determination. Despite seeing his wife for the last time during that harrowing escape, Faisal fought to keep his daughters safe, ultimately managing to secure Selyna temporarily and locating Eka, who was stuck in a banana tree. As the chaos unfolded, Faisal did everything he could to look for Siti while caring for his daughters.

In the aftermath, with international aid slowly arriving, Faisal and his daughters found shelter with the Red Cross. His survival instincts and his community’s support shone through as he navigated their recovery, from searching for lost family to supporting others.

Eventually, Faisal and the girls moved to New Zealand in April 2005, thanks to the support of family and the kindness of strangers. His welding skills soon secured him a job that provided stability for their new life. Five years later, he found love again and married Rini Handayani, with whom he now shares a son.

Today, Faisal’s daughters are thriving—Selyna has completed a Master’s in nursing, and Eka is working in engineering. Faisal reflects on their journey with gratitude and pride, emphasizing that his story is one of hope and perseverance.

Despite the passage of time, he still feels a connection to his lost wife and wishes to return to Aceh to see what has changed since the devastating tsunami. His experiences have taught him the importance of resilience, and he encourages others to never give up, regardless of the hardships faced.

Faisal’s story stands as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of community support in rebuilding lives after tragedy. His love for his daughters and their accomplishments continues to inspire, showcasing that even in the face of great loss, healing and hope can prevail.
