Faisal Syafii’s life took a devastating turn 20 years ago when the Indian Ocean tsunami struck on December 26, 2004. On that tragic day, he lost both his wife, Siti Syamsiah, who was pregnant, and their home in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. However, he managed to save their two daughters, Eka and Selyna, and has since built a new life in New Zealand, displaying resilience in the face of overwhelming adversity.
As Faisal recalls the fateful morning, he was celebrating his 34th birthday when the earthquake struck. Moments before the quake, Siti had shared a loving birthday greeting and brewed his favorite Aceh coffee. When the tremors began, he instinctively rushed to grab his daughters from their beds, seeking shelter in their workshop.
The situation escalated when a powerful tsunami followed shortly after the earthquake. Faisal vividly remembers seeing a massive wall of water appear, leading him and his family into a life-or-death struggle. After losing contact with Siti, he was ultimately swept into a shopping mall, where he fought to save his daughters, reuniting with Eka just when Selyna needed him most.
After enduring harrowing challenges, including being surrounded by tragedy and chaos, Faisal and his daughters were rescued and taken to safety. With the initial devastation giving way to support from international relief efforts like the Red Cross, the process of healing and rebuilding began.
Eventually, through the help of his brother-in-law in New Zealand, Faisal and his daughters immigrated to Auckland. There, he found work as a welder, his skills valued and respected. Over the years, the family flourished as Selyna achieved a Master’s in nursing, Eka pursued a successful career in engineering, and Faisal remarried, bringing more happiness into their lives.
Today, Faisal reflects on his journey not only as a story of loss and survival but as a message of hope. He cherishes the support he received from the New Zealand community and expresses a desire to reconnect with his roots by visiting Aceh again. Despite the shadows of his past, he empowers others with his narrative, urging people to never give up – a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome the darkest moments.
This remarkable story resonates not only as a personal journey of resilience but also reminds us of the importance of community and support in times of crisis. Faisal’s experience exemplifies how love, tenacity, and hope can lead to new beginnings, even after unimaginable loss.
