Faisal Syafii experienced unimaginable loss during the Indian Ocean tsunami two decades ago, which devastated Banda Aceh and claimed the lives of over 250,000 people. On that tragic Boxing Day in 2004, Faisal lost his wife, Siti Syamsiah, who was pregnant at the time, along with their home and business. However, he managed to save their two daughters, Eka and Selyna, showcasing an incredible story of survival and resilience.

On the morning of the earthquake, Faisal recalls his wife giving him a heartfelt birthday wish while their daughters peacefully slept nearby. The tranquility was shattered when a powerful earthquake struck, prompting Faisal to quickly grab his daughters and seek refuge. Despite his efforts to protect his family, disaster struck again with a much larger tremor that unleashed a catastrophic tsunami.

Faisal vividly describes the chaos, the towering wave threatening lives, and the heartbreaking moment he lost contact with Siti while desperately trying to save his daughters. Tragically, Siti was swept away, and despite his frantic search, her body was never found. Faisal was left with the immense burden of loss and the struggle to navigate through the aftermath of the disaster.

In the weeks following the tsunami, Faisal and his daughters faced significant challenges, relying on limited resources and the gradual arrival of international aid. Eventually, a connection with his brother-in-law in New Zealand provided a lifeline, enabling them to relocate to a new country. Settling in New Zealand offered a fresh start; Faisal found work as a welder and his daughters enrolled in school.

As the years passed, Faisal rebuilt his life and even found love again, marrying Rini in 2009. He constructed a stable home for his family and celebrated milestones such as homeownership and his children’s achievements.

Now, as they thrive in New Zealand, Faisal’s daughters have grown up to become accomplished individuals: Selyna has completed a master’s degree in nursing and married, while Eka works in an engineering company. Faisal’s journey emphasizes resilience, gratitude, and the importance of family.

Looking back after 20 years, Faisal reflects on the memories of Aceh and his unresolved grief over losing his wife. He longs to reconnect with survivors from the past, hoping to inspire and provide support for their continued strength.

Faisal’s story is a poignant reminder of the power of perseverance in the face of hardship. His journey illustrates how, even in the wake of such overwhelming tragedy, one can find hope, rebuild, and honor the memory of loved ones through acts of love and resilience. Faisal remains at peace with his past and cherishes the adventures he now shares with his family, including fishing, which symbolizes renewal and connection to the sea he once feared.

This reflective narrative is not only a testimony to human strength but also an inspiration to others facing hardship to never give up on life’s possibilities.
