Faisal Syafii’s life was irrevocably changed 20 years ago by the catastrophic Indian Ocean tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004. On what was supposed to be a celebratory morning for his 34th birthday, a massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated Banda Aceh, resulting in the tragic loss of his first wife, Siti Syamsiah, who was pregnant at the time, and his home and business. Despite the overwhelming tragedy, Faisal’s tale is one of resilience and rebuilding.
At the moment of the earthquake, Faisal recalls the tender moment with his wife, who had just brought him coffee. With two daughters, Eka and Selyna, still asleep, Faisal’s instincts kicked in as he grabbed them and rushed to safety. However, the chaos of the tsunami was apocalyptic. Faisal vividly describes the horrifying scene of destruction, where he saw his home collapse and heard the pleas of others running for their lives.
As he fought to save his daughters amidst the raging waters, he lost sight of his wife. After being swept into a shopping mall, Faisal managed to keep Selyna safe but was unable to find Siti. He vividly portrays the frantic search for her as the devastation unfolded around him and describes being surrounded by the cries of those lost and the reality of a landscape covered in destruction.
In the days that followed the tsunami, as international aid began to arrive, Faisal found shelter with his daughters at a Red Cross tent. His brother-in-law in New Zealand managed to connect with him, offering hope amid despair. In April 2005, Faisal and his daughters arrived in New Zealand, where he found work in welding and gradually began to rebuild their lives.
Over the years, Faisal’s new life flourished. His daughters grew to become accomplished individuals – Selyna completed her master’s degree in nursing and recently married, while Eka works in engineering. Faisal remarried and embraced family life again with his wife, Rini Handayani, welcoming a son along the way. He reflects on the community’s support that helped him overcome his darkest days, emphasizing the importance of resilience and the never-give-up attitude.
Though Faisal carries the burden of guilt for not finding his wife’s body, he allows hope and pride in his daughters’ achievements to help him cope. He expresses a yearning to return to Aceh to reconnect with those who survived and share his story.
