Taichi Vakasama, a national swimming champion, emphasizes that success in sports can also translate to academic excellence, declaring that “nothing is impossible.” Vakasama proudly graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Fiji on November 29.

At just 24 years old, Vakasama described his educational journey at the Umanand Prasad School of Medicine and Health Science, located at Saweni Campus in Lautoka, as challenging. Balancing the rigors of medical studies alongside his swimming commitments was not an easy feat. “The first year at university was a whole new experience with a steep learning curve,” he shared, noting the substantial workload from the program.

Vakasama highlighted that the combination of being an Olympian and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges. However, with time, he adapted and managed to balance his training and academic responsibilities effectively. He credited his fellow students for their support, as they assisted him by sharing notes and lessons during his absences from class due to competitions.

In expressing gratitude for his accomplishments, Vakasama dedicated them to his parents, acknowledging their unwavering support and encouragement as a vital factor in his success.

Vakasama’s athletic achievements are noteworthy. He has competed in the men’s 100 meters breaststroke at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships in Hangzhou, China, and represented Fiji at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Additionally, he holds the Pacific Games record for the men’s 200m breaststroke and reached the semi-finals in the men’s 100m breaststroke at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. His impressive swimming career began with becoming the first Fijian swimmer to win a medal at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.

With roots connecting to both Japan through his mother and to Daliconi, Vanuabalavu in Lau through his father, Vakasama’s achievements are a testament to hard work and resilience.

This inspiring story illustrates the power of determination and the importance of support systems, showcasing that it is possible to excel in multiple demanding fields simultaneously.

Summary: Taichi Vakasama, a national swimming champion, graduated with a medical degree while maintaining his sports career. His journey was full of challenges, but his ability to balance academics and athletics with support from friends and family has led to significant achievements in both fields. Vakasama emphasizes that success is attainable, highlighting the positive influence of perseverance and encouragement in achieving one’s goals.
