Eliza Anna Mongston’s journey is a remarkable example of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of love. Hailing from Taunovo in Serua, she grew up in a humble yet supportive environment, shaped by the hardworking values instilled by her parents, who now reside in Lepanoni Settlement.
At the age of 18, Eliza faced a life-changing challenge when she discovered she was pregnant. The news brought a wave of fear and confusion, leaving her uncertain about how to navigate this unexpected turn of events. Her family grappled with their disappointment, especially concerned about how their community would react. Despite being a diligent student at Lomary Secondary School, the stigma surrounding teenage pregnancy led to her suspension, tossing her dreams into disarray. After three weeks away from school, she enrolled in the Matua Programme at Nabua, where she remained determined to continue her education. Eliza gave birth to her son just a month before her Year 12 exams, yet she defied the odds and excelled academically.
Emboldened by her experiences, Eliza sought a second chance at Lomary Secondary School, reaching out to Principal Josua Tawake. Initially, the school had no openings, but her unwavering dedication convinced the principal to welcome her back and even encouraged her to aim for the prestigious title of school dux. Unfazed by negativity and judgment from others, she focused on her goals, fuelled by the love for her child.
After months of hard work and sacrifice, Eliza achieved what many deemed impossible: she graduated from high school and was named Dux of Lomary Secondary School. Her graduation speech resonated deeply with those in attendance, as she shared her powerful narrative of overcoming the weight of teenage motherhood and societal expectations.
Reflecting on her tumultuous year, Eliza acknowledged both the challenges and the growth they fostered. She credited her support system, including her baby’s father, family, friends, teachers, and principal, for their belief in her potential. Eliza’s story serves as an inspiration, conveying a vital message to young women facing similar obstacles: “Never give up. No matter what people say, always believe in yourself.”
