Eliza Anna Mongston’s life serves as an inspiring example of determination, resilience, and the power of love. Hailing from the small settlement of Taunovo in Serua, Eliza faced numerous challenges growing up, but her hardworking parents instilled in her the values of perseverance that would guide her throughout her life.
At just 18 years old, Eliza’s world was turned upside down when she learned she was pregnant. Overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, she was unsure of how to handle the judgment she anticipated from her family and community. Despite her previous academic capabilities and passion for netball, Eliza faced the additional burden of being suspended from her school, Lomary Secondary School, after news of her pregnancy spread.
Undeterred, Eliza enrolled in the Matua Programme at Nabua, where she continued her education and gave birth to a healthy baby boy just a month before her Year 12 exams. Remarkably, she excelled in her exams, proving to herself that she could overcome adversity. Her son became her primary source of motivation, driving her to achieve more than she ever thought possible.
In an empowering turn of events, Eliza reached out to the principal of her former school, Josua Tawake, seeking a chance to return. After recognizing her determination, he welcomed her back and encouraged her to aim high— suggesting she strive to become the school’s dux. Ignoring criticism from others, Eliza dedicated herself to her studies, determined to create a brighter future for herself and her child.
Her hard work paid off when she graduated and was named Dux of Lomary Secondary School, a significant achievement not just for her, but also for her family, community, and young mothers everywhere. Eliza delivered an emotional speech during her graduation, sharing her struggles and the moment she decided to push forward despite the overwhelming odds against her.
Reflecting on her tough journey, Eliza acknowledged that while the past year was fraught with challenges, it was also transformative. Supported by her child’s father, family, and friends, she learned that her struggles only made her stronger. Eliza’s story is a powerful testament to believing in oneself and the importance of perseverance.
She encourages other young women facing challenges to remain steadfast and resilient, proclaiming, “Never give up. No matter what people say, always believe in yourself.” Her mother, Lusiane Vuki, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for support and encouragement for young girls facing difficulties, reminding them that their potential is limitless.
Eliza’s journey is a poignant reminder that even in the face of trials, success is attainable with determination and support. Her story can act as an inspiration for many, showcasing the incredible strength found in resilience and the love that motivates us to forge ahead.
