Emotions ran high in a small room at Vodafone Arena as the Sagar family celebrated a significant milestone in the life of their daughter, Priyashna Shivangi Sagar, who was honored with the Best Student Award for her Bachelor of Commerce degree. Traveling from Nasau in Nadi, her parents, Sunita Devi and Ram Sagar, were overcome with pride and joy as their daughter walked the aisle to receive her award.
At just 21 years old, Priyashna is a standout student majoring in Economics and Accounting at Fiji National University, Namaka Campus in Nadi. She attributes her achievements to a foundation built on dedication and perseverance, shaped by the financial struggles her family faced throughout her upbringing.
“Growing up, financial challenges were always there,” she remarked, reflecting on her family’s journey. “My father took on various casual jobs to ensure that we stayed in school.” Even with two elder siblings who have since entered the workforce, Priyashna remained focused on her education, setting clear priorities despite the hardships at home.
Her achievement was especially poignant for her family, particularly her mother, who became emotional as she witnessed the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. “The struggles have paid off, and I can’t express how grateful I am for this day,” said Ms. Devi, highlighting the crucial importance of support programs such as bus fare assistance and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service that eased their financial burden.
Priyashna has not only excelled academically—having received the Dux award in Year 10 at Mulomulo Primary School and ranking second in her final year at Mulomulo Secondary School—but she is also now building her professional career at Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPGM) International Limited.
